Support for viticulture with European contributions: € 11.2 billion between 2009 and 2018
March 24, 2018

These are the large numbers published by the department of the European Union. The trend over time has been fairly constant, at around 1-1.2 billion a year. In general, the measures for the restructuring of the vineyards accounted for about 45% of the total, the aid to contain the annual production (distillations, MCR, green harvesting and insurance aid) about 17%, the promotion of products on 14 % and investment support around 15%. Spain was the main beneficiary with about 3.2 billion euro of contributions, 29% of the total, although its production is only 23% of the European total. After the Spaniards, Italy is here: it received 43% of the contributions to restructure the vineyards (in line with the European average), 21% for the promotion (14% in Europe), and a good 26% for short-term measures term (17% in Europe) while we have sacrificed investment support. In other words, we have invested more than others to “fix” short-term problems and less to fix long-term ones.

On the other hand, the largest share in proportion of the funds received from the French, € 2.6 billion, has gone into promoting investment. France received 23% of the total budget despite representing 28% of the average production of the decade.
